What is the Safe and Sound Protocol?
The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a gentle, music-based therapy that helps calm your nervous system, ease stress, and improve connection with yourself and others.
Through sound, it helps shift your body out of survival mode and into a state of safety and regulation.
How Does the SSP Work?
SSP uses specially filtered music to gently engage the part of your nervous system responsible for relaxation and social connection.
As you listen, the music helps your body subconsciously recognize “safety cues.” These tones signal calm and connection in human voices and everyday sounds.
When your system begins to recognize these cues, it can stay more regulated in situations that might once have triggered a stress response—such as fight, flight, or freeze.
Over time, this process can support greater ease in:
Recovering from stress
Maintaining focus throughout the day
Rest and sleep quality
Digestion and energy
Comfort and connection in social settings
Who Can Benefit?
SSP can support children, teens, and adults with a wide range of experiences, including:
Anxiety, depression, burnout, or trauma-related stress
Sensory sensitivities or overstimulation
Difficulty connecting with others
Focus, sleep, or digestion issues
Chronic pain, fatigue, or inflammation
Mood instability and emotional dysregulation
SSP can complement therapy, coaching, or other wellness practices, helping your body return to a state of safety and balance.
What to Expect in this Program
SSP involves listening to specially designed music through over-ear headphones. Though most of your listening will be on your schedule, you might occasionally listen with your provider/facilitator during a session.
You will have an initial consultation with your provider to discuss your goals, explore how the Safe and Sound Protocol may support you, and review your nervous-system patterns and readiness for the listening program.
Each following session is brief (usually 15–30 minutes) and progresses gradually at your own pace. Your provider will guide you in setting a schedule that feels safe and manageable for your nervous system.
